America: Where people barter sex for McNuggets and parents steal their children's identities to open a credit card behind their back.
In a shocking Reddit thread, an individual under the name Sales_Associate said his parents stole his identity and then applied for a line of credit in his name while he was traveling abroad.
NOTE: We can't verify this account, but it is a valuable story nonetheless.
Next thing he knew, his parents had racked up $6,000 in debt and collections agencies were hounding him day and night to pay up.
Then all hell broke loose.
Here's how he explains what happened next:
"[sic] I opened up a police investigation and we discovered that it was indeed my mom and dad that were using the card. I had the option to charge them with identity theft and sue them for damages, but I gave them the option to pay it off. They took out a loan against their house and took care of it, however my credit is complete horsesh*t right now."
Of course, Sales_Associate's parents aren't the only ones doing dirty deeds with their family's money. A 73-year-old Indiana grandmother named Edna Sue Pate is currently on the lam after being charged with gambling away her grandson's entire college fund—$97,000. And a recent Experian study on medical identity fraud found the crime runs rampant when people share their insurance cards with family members.
